September 18, 2018— Japanese firm, Shimizu-Konoike, has been awarded the first lot of works at $43 million for the proposed Kampala Flyover Construction and Road Upgrading Project (KFCRUP) that is expected to alleviate traffic congestion in the Greater Kampala metropolitan area.

The Japanese government through the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA), is paying for the nearly $150 million project that will take at least five years before completion.”What we are signing today (Monday) is a contract for Lot 1 of the project. Lot 2 will be contacted differently in 2019 once the funder (JICA) approves additional fund,” Allen Kagina, Uganda National Roads Authority executive director said during a news conference.

Kagina said the project will be divided in lots with the first lot covering the Clock Tower, Shoprite and Nsambya Road junctions while Lot 2 will cover Kitgum House and Garden City Junctions

The Lot 1 will include building a flyover at the Clock Tower, widening of roads like Queensway, Entebbe Road Improvement, Nsambya Road, Mukwano Road and Gaba Road, building of pedestrian bridges at the Clock Tower, Shoprite and Kibuli, Junction Upgrading at Shoprite and Kibuli, and an underpass at Nsambya.

“All these works when they finally begin will interrupt usual routines and we ask all Ugandans to bear with us and follow the given traffic guidelines so that the contractor is not disrupted and delivers the project within the set time,” Kagina said
