MTN in tactical response to UCC Simcard freeze
March 15, 2018 – MTN Uganda is dangling carrots at dormant subscribers as it moves to compensate for the dampening effect a regulatory order on subscriber registration is likely to have on the business.
On offer are free voice calls and data bundles valid for days on end to customers whose accounts have been dormant for at least a month. The reasoning is that getting dormant subscribers to talk again could to some extent plug the leakage caused by the freeze on new sim card sales until national ID readers are installed by the Telco’s.
“MTN has embarked on an aggressive drive to reactivate dormant SIMs. There are customers who, for one reason or another, may have SIM cards that are not in use at all or use them during specific periods.
“MTN has offered them free voice calls and free MBs (data), valid for 3 days for all customers reactivating use of their MTN SIM cards after more than 30 days of inactivity,” said MTN Uganda’s manager for corporate affairs Valery Okecho.
