Madhvani Scholarship breaks record with 172 awards
KAMPALA, July 25 – The Madhvani Foundation scholarship scheme capped its 14th year by extending a hand to a record 172 talented but underprivileged students who have been selected to benefit from Scholarships worth Ushs 711 million for the 2016/17 round.
The 172 selected from 1100 applications betters the record of 152 that won the scholarships during the 2015/16 round. Added to the 135 that were continuing the scholarship is now catering for a concurrent total of 307 beneficiaries.Commenting on the geographical and demographical distribution of the scholarship recipients, Gabriel Opio the Chairman of the Scholarship Sub –committee revealed that the Eastern region dominated with 33percent while the central region came second with 27 percent. Of the professional courses, Engineering and Commerce accounted for a combined 43 and 37 percent respectively followed by Medicine 27and Agriculture 21percent.
“This is in line with the vision of the founder of the Madhvani Group who believed that the secret to Uganda’s development lay in the education ofits people in science and technical courses,” Gerald Ssendaula the Foundation Chairman said.
The scheme has awarded scholarships worth a cumulative Ush 7 since its inception fourteen years ago.
