A New Board for URC
KAMPALA, JAN 06, 2016- A new board is expected to be announced for rail sector asset holder and regulator Uganda Railways Corporation URC, following the emergence of a list of nominees. 256BN has learned that Hannington Karuhanga who is not entirely unconnected with the first family, is the Chair designate of the eight member board that also has former RVR staffer Ms Keen Twesigye.
Twesigye is currently running her law firm and though she is said to be close to the Current Minister of Works and Transport Engineer John Byabagambi, she is also known for her uncompromising stand against corruption.
Hajjat Aphwa Sebyala Kawaase, an Associate of the Chartered Insurance Institute UK (ACII)-London school of Insurance (UK) and the first woman to get this professional qualification in Uganda is the other woman on the board.
Moses Mwase, the Director of the Privatisation Unit in the Ministry of Finance, Sunrise founder and board member at the Directorate of National Citizenship and Immigration Patrick Kabunakuki, Hon Jowali Kyeyago, Eng. David Kwengwa Kapsanduy and Hon. Benon Jackson Todwo are the other nominees.
Eng. Charles Kateba, who like his colleague at Treasury Keith Muhakanizi has for donkey’s years been acting MD at URC is not on the board probably because his position is not substantive.
With key decisions such as the procurement of a contractor for Uganda’s SGR, the new board will be more of a midwife to sector whose stature is likely to bounce back as the country moves towards a more integrated multi-modal transport system with key developments such as the Inland port at Bukasa and the proposed Kampala metro.
